Four Days Workshop Level 1 & 2 Athens
Sep 4-7, 10 am - 2 pm (no previous experience needed)
Available spots
Join me for an immersive 4-day workshop where we’ll explore the art of coiling and create two iterations of the Woman Vessel. This workshop will combine elements from both Level 1 and Level 2, offering a comprehensive experience for beginners and more experienced participants alike. Level 1 (Days 1-2): In the first two days, we’ll take a more intuitive approach to coiling. You’ll learn the basics of coiling, such as clay preparation, making and attaching coils, and forming a vessel. I will guide you through creating your own version of the Woman Vessel, focusing on asymmetrical curves, changes in direction, and forming a narrow neck. This part of the workshop is perfect for beginners and those looking to refine their coiling technique, while more advanced students can experiment with their own variations. Level 2 (Days 3-4): On days 3 and 4, we’ll move into a more structural approach, diving deeper into the design process. You’ll receive a diagram of the vessel’s section, which includes an inwardly shaped groove (as opposed to the outward belly we covered in Level 1), complete with dimensions. I will guide you step by step on how to transform this two-dimensional drawing into a three-dimensional form. This process requires more thoughtful planning, as you work to control the material and gravity to bring your envisioned curves into reality. Level 2 offers better control over the material and how to shape it according to your vision, so you can create more precise, planned forms. After completing both Level 1 and Level 2, you’ll be able to blend both approaches—sometimes working from a pre-planned vision, and other times allowing for intuitive experimentation to complement the form as a whole. Level 1: Learn the fundamentals of coiling and explore intuitive, organic forms with a focus on creating asymmetry and understanding the relationship between your hands and the clay. Level 2: Take a more structured approach, learning to visualise and execute specific curves using precise measurements and thoughtful planning. To keep the focus on learning and exploration, firing is not included as part of the Athens experience. Coordinating transportation and kiln logistics can take away from the immediacy of the making process — and this workshop is about being present, experimenting, and growing. Of course, if you'd like to fire your piece independently afterward, you're very welcome to. To inquire about payment plans, kindly email info@karinasmagulova.com
